A Life, with Knitting

One of the ways I find content for our Facebook page is an as-it-happens google alert for the word “knitting.” I get several emails per day with the usual industrial knitting reports from China, a lot of recent news about a fire at a concert venue in Boise called The Knitting Factory, and today, this lovely little obituary from Madison, Wisconsin.

At first Jean’s life seems pretty ordinary. She had what appears to be a happy family, rewarding and successful work, and, there it is in the last few lines, a love of knitting. Then one considers the time period. She was born in 1929 and was getting her degrees at Northwestern in the 50′s. She completed a Phd in 1960 and went on to a career in academia and research while raising children and keeping a marriage together at a time when such things were not always the results of a woman’s dreams. She kind of rocked the midcentury world, whether she realized it or not.

And then there’s the knitting. It mattered enough for a mention in the one thing people will use to sum up her life. How did it figure? I can imagine all the ways. Maybe she, like many in her generation, learnt it as a child and it was both solace and survival during the long hours of doctoral lectures. Maybe, because it was domestic and represented the old ways, it went by the wayside while she lived her ordinary yet radical life, then she picked it up again when she retired. Maybe she learned later and it filled holes left by lost loved ones and the end of work. During whatever time period, I like thinking of her knitting and her knitting friends as a good companions throughout her days, both the good and the inevitable bad.

And I have so many questions! Living in Wisconsin as she did, did Jean know and read Elizabeth Zimmermann? Maybe they were friends! I feel like they could have been kindred spirits, what with their matching “sparkling intellects” and all. Did she subscribe to Knitter’s magazine? Or attend any of our events? I wonder if Mavis can find that out…Oh Jean, I wish I’d had the chance to meet you.

Mostly though, I love knowing that she did all the things. All. The. Things. And she did them with some knitting in her bag and a twinkle in her eye.

“Take the Chill Off is ON my needles and I’m about halfway done. Thanks again to @alexandras_crafts for the prize at @stitchesevents Midwest and Nikki West for the beautiful pattern. I’ll be keeping this one for myself and I’m looking forward to wearing it in the coming weeks! I must confess, after crocheting two dresses over the past month, I’m enjoying this “tv knitting” project and it does have a few errors, but hey, it’s about the process, right? 😝🤓⠀
